As seen above her music falls under the Singer/Songwriter genre when browsing in itunes.
After observing this i decided to do in-depth research into this genre to help me establish the roots of the genre and it's particular forms and conventions.
Singer/Songwriter are musicians who write, compose, sing & play there own musical material which includes lyrics and melodies. They were in the past seen opposed to contemporary popular music culture, however in recent years the genre has become increasingly more popular. This is due to big artist like 'Ed Sheeran' who have brought this genre to the forefront in the 21st century.
Singer/Songwriter is considered to have a distinct form of artistry closely associated with folk-acoustic traditions. Often seen to perform the entire composition/song themselves typically using guitar or piano. This genres origins can be traced back to North America to singers who developed works in blues & folk music styles. This is where there tradition for writing lyrics on topical issues was established. This was done particularly by one group the Lead Belly's "Jim Crow Blues", singer would attend rallies etc and therefore wrote songs focusing on the issues facing them at the time.
During 1940s through the 1960s young performers were inspired by traditional folk & blues music and began writing & performing their own original music. There is strong correlation between these genres however even more so with the country genre. This is due to the fact that the 1st popular recognition of this genre occurred in 1960s early 1970s when country musicians rose to popularity as well as blues and folk. All these genres have strong connections in there storytelling approach to music along with there similarly slow and rustic style of singing. In the development of country folk songs they became highly personal & often 1st person introspective POV. These developments leaded to singer/songwriter genre which was described as 'confessional' and 'sensitive'.
